Assalamu Alaikum!
Today we thought we would share a list of our baking equipment essentials. Just note that these are all things that we would have in a beginner's baking set, so we are not including any electrical appliances or fancy kitchen gadgets.
1. Rolling Pin
Everyone needs a good rolling pin for rolling out cookie dough, pizza bases, flapjacks, etc. We have found that the best rolling pins are the ones without handles. They are more manoeuvrable, durable and easier to clean.
2. Wooden Mixing Spoon
In general, wood is better and safer to use than plastic, and it also lasts forever. We really like using our mum's wooden mixing spoons and they are probably around 20 years old!
3. Mixing Bowl
In our opinion, a large and sturdy mixing bowl is an essential. If you can get one with a lid then it is even better. We need a large bowl as we are big family, but a medium-sized one will do for a smaller family.
4. Spatula
We like the medium-sized rubber spatulas and feel that they are all we really need. However, if you would also like them in another size, then we would recommend getting a small-sized one too.
5. Sieve
When it comes to sieves, it is always best to make sure that you get a metal one and that you get a large-sized one.
6. Whisk
A hand whisk is definitely a must-have item and can sometimes even replace a sieve(if you don't have one). Try to make sure that you get a strong, sturdy one and that you only use it to whisk dry ingredients and thin batters and liquids. This way it will not get damaged and will last longer.
7. Measuring Cups
Obviously, we will need something to measure our ingredients with! A set of, preferably stainless steel, measuring cups is quite useful.
8. Cookie Cutters
The most practical cookie cutters are the circular ones. This is because, unlike other shapes, they allow the cookies to cook evenly. You might notice with star-shaped cookie cutters, for example, that the pointed ends of the star-shaped cookies often overcook.
9. Muffin Trays
Most beginner bakers start off with something simple such as cupcakes or muffins. For this reason, we would recommend getting a couple of muffin trays.
10. Cake Tins
You can have several different cake tins of various sizes, shapes and depths, but if we were to recommend one to start with, it would be a 9 inch round cake tin. It is also best to buy a deeper one, and not the shallow sandwich cake tins - you can always cut the cake in half if you want to frost the middle of it.
Well, that is all for this post. We hope that you found it helpful and enjoyable to read - and we also apologise for getting it up so late! See you next Friday, insha'Allah.
